Nessa II C-GJIV flying since 1987 inspired by the early Avid Flyer. It flew with a two stoke engine for about 2.0 hours. I experienced my first dead-stick landing, engine seized due a language communication error, I understood that it was 65 hp but 55 hp was the real thing -- the prop was too coarse, the Hirth engine overheated and so did the Pilot.
Early 1990 I was airborne again but this time it had a 3 Cyl. 1000 cc Geo Metro engine with the full TBI fuel injection out of the car (no catalytic convertor), too heavy but with folding wing it probably could pass the Ontario Drive Clean inspection for emissions.
I learned a few things with this installation, three more dead-stick landings took place. In spite all the failures and setbacks I ended up with an airplane at Oshkosh event of 1991 the project flew the 1200 miles return many times to the Oshkosh fly-in and logged more then 375 hours on the 3 Cyl.
Oct. 95 I removed the 3 Cyl. (working OK) it's back on the road again, got installed in a Geo Metro, I'm sure the owner brags about his engine powering an airplane.
A "92 1300 cc 4 Cyl was installed with very few modifications, no distributor, no fuel injection and no coolant thermostat, stock intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds stayed. The R3 (3th generation) home made drive less then 20 lb was installed. A distributor-less ignition was installed (see how "Ignition"). Mr. Gravity replaced the high pressure fuel pump and a motorcycle slide type of carb (see "Fuel") was installed. For the next 700 hours only regular oil changes, spark-plugs and one set of spark-plugs wires was needed.
This self designed 4130 frame with 6061-t6 tube spars was up-dated to a Nessa III by May of 1996. The fuselage became longer and a new wing. I had been flying since the first Geo with a ballast weight at the back end of the fuselage, it was designed around a two stroke. In Oct. 1991 I had commissioned Harry C. Riblett to improve my airfoil, it was too slow, lots of drag. Harry came up with a GA30U-612 that the Kitfox IV ended up using. With the new airfoil the airplane performed better and the cruise speed was improved.
Nessa II has introduced hundreds of first timer's to the experience of flight. Here are a group Boys Scouts and parents being briefed prior to taking to the air.

Capable of carrying the camping gear plus the two adults to survive the Oshkosh week.
